Use an old laptop as a second monitor with Xdmx

Today I’m going to show you how to install xdmx. Basically it will allow you to use an old laptop as an extra monitor. It can also be used to make huge tiled displays. Lets say you want a 16 monitor display. You can’t fit 16 video cards in your machine, so how would could you do that…with xdmx! First thing you want to do is install xdmx on every machine that you are going to use, for me its my main workstation and my old laptop. The problem is that the xdmx package that is in the ubuntu repositories is broken, it throws seg faults left and right. So go here packages.debian.org and download xdmx. Install it with sudo dpkg -i xdmx_1.1.1-21etch5_i386.deb To run xdmx securely you are going to want to run it through an ssh tunnel. You can also run xdmx by turning on X11 tcp listening but this is a huge security hole. It will allow anyone on your network to see every keystroke you make in an X environment. So on the computer that you are going to use as the xserver (my workstation) you need to have an ssh-server installed. sudo apt-get install openssh-server Now from my old laptop (your second display) ssh into your main workstation. To make things faster use a blowfish cypher. ssh -X -c blowfish-cbc user@maincomputer Now type: export |grep DISP you see something similar to this: (the numbers might be different) paradox@griver:~$ export |grep DISP declare -x DISPLAY=”localhost:10.0″ Now you need to start an xdmx xserver. You need to run the command on the main workstation but

Hey, the kensington lock for notebooks isn’t as safe as the manufacturer describes. You can crack it with a very cheap tool…

My grandmother always told me, “You expect to find 2 when you come back?” whenever I’d walk away from something as a kid. She was right, how about people don’t leave anything laying around, no need for lock…

  34. TheMolemi says:

    So fine, so good, 2006…
Just had a CLOSE lock (trying the same as foxpower) at a new MicroSaver of kensington. Locks and keys are different today. What he is doing does not work anymore with current locks. Try yourself!

I would be interested in videos showing how save/unsafe a current lock is. I do two things: a kensington plus an alarm software (iAlarmU) for my Macbook.

  35. jrocha827 says:

@gmecomber I notice the same thing!! whats crazy the orb has a tail if you look closely!

  40. mandowarrior123 says:

@jubilant102938 Hmm I don’t think your poor intelligence grasped the fact that I just called you a stupid loser with no friends who doesn’t know how to take care of their own belongings.

  41. jubilant102938 says:

@mandowarrior123 The only useful info I got from your comment is that you are a loser with nothing else to do. No friends to hang with? LOL

  42. mandowarrior123 says:

    @jubilant102938
    1) move to Japan
    2) a laptops not going as fast, they have to be pretty brave to nab it
3)write HOMOSEXUAL in big letters on it not even theives want to walk around with that
    4) invest in dell exploding batteries, so you will at least be content with taking their cock off with it.
    5) become good at ropetying and tie it to the desk
there are many others of course but the best is
    EXTRA) Get friends.

  43. SweetSugarLemonade says:

another way.. to give criminals ideas… >>

  44. jubilant102938 says:

So…..What shoud I do? I was about to get a Kensington lock, but after watching this…not too sure about that. But I really need something to secure my laptop while I’m in the washroom or something.. there are so many hungry students in the school library lookingto steal anything! lol.. I once left an ipod for about 10 seconds, and it was already gone..

  45. pendejadafcc says:

I wanna see someone try to rip it off…. Any suggestions anybody? Like, is the circuitry attached to the lock so that if you pull it the components get destroyed?

  46. GQYoon says:

i fiddled around with it for 2 hrs, seriously bro?, you sat there for 2 hrs trying to break a lock, heres a tip, it comes with a key

  47. yodaflyz says:

Thanks, I was considering this for my new pc. I guess I will look elsewhere as this seems like it would be quick to pull off with such a cheep tool..

  48. xshanghu says:

    Wekk done 5*****

  49. namesnotimportant2u says:

I realise that, but what is the point of helping thieves that didn’t know this technique? That was my point!!

  50. fedelst says:

@namesnotimportant2u The vulnerabilities of cylindrical locks have been known for quite a while. There are hundreds of videos demonstrating these vulnerabilities, and the fact that the submitter is showing it on a Kensington laptop lock does not mean that the vulnerability did not exist before the video was made.

Fact is, Kensington might want to consider using a more robust mechanism if the intend to the retain market value in their products.

You are a bit off base.
